Your swim leg is where your race is won or lost. Let's fix it.
Most triathletes are exceptional athletes. They put in the training hours, they have the data, they've optimised their nutrition and their kit. But the swim leg often the shortest discipline by time continues to cost them more than it should.
Not because they're not fit enough. Because nobody has ever given them the technical coaching that actually makes the difference in the water. And here's what I know from competing at three Olympic Games:
Swimming efficiency isn't about fitness it's about technique. Technique is coachable at any level, in any pool, at any point in your training season. The athletes who transform their swim leg aren't the ones who swim more. They're the ones who finally get the right coaching.
You're leaving 2 – 4 minutes in the water that your bike and run can never recover!
At any distance from sprint to Ironman, swim inefficiency costs time that no amount of cycling or running fitness can compensate for. Those minutes come directly off your finish time and they're almost entirely technical, not fitness-related.
You're burning energy in the water you need for the rest of the race!
An inefficient stroke doesn't just cost time it costs energy. Every unnecessary movement, every excess of drag, every inefficient breath is drawing on reserves you need for 90 miles of cycling and a marathon. Technique coaching changes the energy equation of your entire race.
Open water swimming is a completely different challenge to pool training & you've never been coached for it!
Sighting, pack swimming, contact starts, unpredictable conditions, no lane rope, open water racing demands a completely different set of skills to pool training. Most triathlon coaching never addresses this gap properly.
You've done more pool sessions and the problem hasn't gone away!
Volume isn't the answer. If more swimming fixed inefficient technique, it would have fixed it by now. What you need is the technical framework that changes how you move through the water not just more opportunities to reinforce the same habits.
You arrive at T1 already depleted and it shows on the bike!
When the swim has cost more than it should, the early miles of the bike reflect it. Heart rate too high, legs not responding, nutrition plan disrupted. The swim sets the tone for the entire race and right now, it's setting the wrong one.
The minutes you're losing in the water are coachable!

What's inside for Triathletes & Multisport Athletes
Olympic swim coaching applied to triathlon performance - five areas that change your race.
-
Stroke efficiency and energy conservation The technical mechanics of swimming faster with less effort. Catch mechanics, drag reduction, body position, and the stroke adjustments that transform your energy economy in the water. For triathletes, this is the most valuable coaching available the difference between arriving at T1 depleted and arriving ready to race.
-
Open water skills and race-specific technique. Sighting technique, bilateral breathing, drafting, contact starts, and managing unpredictable conditions. The skills that pool training never covers and that make the difference between a controlled open water swim and a survival effort that empties the tank before you've even started.
-
Breathing patterns and pacing strategy. How to breathe efficiently under race pressure, manage heart rate in the first minutes of the swim, and pace the leg for the race ahead rather than the swim in isolation. James' elite-level pacing intelligence applied directly to triathlon swim strategy at every race distance.
-
Turns, push-offs and pool training optimisation. Even for open water racing, your pool training is where technique is built. Turns, push-offs, and underwater work all develop the propulsion mechanics that carry into open water. James covers every element of pool session efficiency so your training hours translate directly to race performance.
-
Swim training structure within a triathlon plan. How to integrate swim training intelligently within a three-discipline training plan. Session design, weekly volume, and how to make every pool session count when your training time is already spread across three sports. Elite periodisation principles adapted for the time-constrained triathlete.
-
Monthly live Q&A with James live access. Bring your specific race, your specific swim split, your specific challenge. James answers directly, every month, in a live session inside the Academy. For triathletes who have never had access to elite swim coaching, this is the conversation that changes everything.
What changes when you fix your swim?
-
You stop leaving minutes in the water
-
The technical coaching in the Academy targets the specific inefficiencies that cost triathletes the most time. For most members, the improvements in their swim split happen faster than they expect, because technique responds quickly when it's coached correctly.
-
You arrive at T1 with more in reserve. Better technique means less energy expended for the same or usually faster swim time. That energy compounds across the bike and the run. Members consistently report that their entire race feels different when the swim stops costing them more than it should.
-
Open water no longer feels like a lottery. With the right technical foundation and the open water skills module, race-day open water swimming becomes a controllable, manageable discipline rather than the part of the race you just try to survive.
-
Your swim training hours start working harder. The Academy's training structure module helps you make every pool session count within a three-discipline training plan. Less time in the water, better outcomes, because the sessions are built around what actually improves triathlon swim performance.
-
You get direct access to an Olympic champion every month

James Guy MBE was crowned Aquatics GB Champion Athlete for 2025 as a memorable season of aquatics achievements was celebrated at The Aquatics GB Awards in Newport Nov 25

The 30-year-old has won three Olympic gold medals as well as three silvers having topped the podium twice in Tokyo in the 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m mixed medley and once in Paris – defending the 4x200m freestyle crown alongside Duncan Scott, Tom Dean, and Matt Richards. Guy won his first Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow back in 2014 in the 4x100m medley, kickstarting a career which has also seen him become a six-time world champion.

As a youngster, James Guy MBE was inspired by the magnificent achievements of the legendary Michael Phelps. Now he has told Team England’s Commonwealth Games rookies his philosophy to becoming a champion – having swum faster than his hero in Rio.

After two silver medals in the relay events at the Rio Olympics, James Guy says that to be part of the Olympic team for the second time is ‘something truly special’.
